RCEM Curriculum and Proposed Changes to the Examination Structure
The 2015 curriculum is now available to download from our website here.
In addition to publicising the new curriculum we would like to take this opportunity to explain that the proposed changes to the examination structure (introducing the Primary examination and Intermediate certificate and updating the components of the FCEM examination) have not yet received final approval from the GMC, who have requested further information from the College on the standard setting processes for each component of the new examination structure.
All potential candidates should therefore resume following the existing examination structure:
MCEM Parts A, B and C
FCEM – Clinical SAQ and OSCE, Critical Appraisal SAQ, Management Viva and Clinical Topic Review
We realise this is a departure from the College’s previous advice and apologise that the College had understood the GMC’s approval of the curriculum to include the proposed changes to the examination structure, but this is not the case. Whilst the College is working very closely with the GMC to resolve their queries, because of the time scales involved, we are unable to say with certainty that the new examination structure will be introduced as planned from August 2016. To ensure that no candidate is therefore disadvantaged as a result of the postponed introduction of the new examination structure, it has been necessary to correct our advice.
The proposed examination structure remains unchanged but we are utilising the opportunity to refine the examination processes, listening to feedback already received from colleagues. We have worked with the GMC to ensure that the College can be as flexible as possible.
I am sorry for the confusion created but have sought to revise the information provided to candidates at the earliest opportunity having receiving confirmation from the GMC regarding the status of the proposed examination structure.
If you have any queries regarding the above information please contact the new Director of Education at the College, Emily Beet (Emily.Beet@rcem.ac.uk)
